2010 QAS SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS

Summer is a time for freedom and fun. We hope it is also a time for planning and preparation. QAS Summer Reading Program assignments are an important part of each student’s education as they plan and prepare for another successful year. We wish everyone a wonderful and inspiring summer.

Queen Anne School’s 2010 Summer Reading Program FAQ:

WHY does QAS assign summer assignments?

We at Queen Anne School believe that education happens throughout the year, even during the summer.  The purpose of the Summer Reading program is to stimulate thinking, learning, and creative expression during the three months our students are away from the classroom.  While we realize that many students have summer jobs, family obligations, and the need for time to relax and enjoy their time away from school, we want to make sure they are prepared for their classes in September.  Toward that end, many QAS teachers ask students to do reading and/or writing assignments over the summer, which must be completed by the first day of school.

HOW MUCH work will I have to do?

Middle school students will have only English assignments.  Upper school students should expect to have summer work for English, as well as for upper level Honors and AP classes in math, and science, and social studies.  There is no 2010 work for foreign language classes.

Is this work REALLY important?

All of these assignments are integral to the work you will be doing during the first few weeks of school.  None of this is “busy work”; all of it is necessary to the successful start of the new school year.  Students beginning school in September without having completed their summer reading assignments will be at a real disadvantage.  In most cases, the first few weeks of class will focus on the summer reading material, and you may be asked to write essays, take quizzes or tests, or otherwise demonstrate proficiency in the assigned material during your first few days back.

Where can I find the books I need to buy?

All summer reading books are easily purchased through local bookstores or online.  Please use the ISBN’s provided to make sure you are buying the correct edition (especially of textbooks).  Amazon.com is an excellent source of new and used books.  If you enter the ISBN into Google, you will find a list of other sources for the books you’ll need.

When are these assignments due?

Most summer assignments are due the first day of school, Monday, August 23, 2010.  Occasionally, an individual teacher may choose a different due-date – this will be clearly spelled out in the assignment listing.  If not otherwise stated in the listing, the due date is 8/23.

What if I didn’t register at QAS until late in the summer?  Do I still have to do the summer work?

Yes, ALL students are responsible for completing the summer assignments.  However, students whose contracts with Queen Anne School are signed on or after Monday, August 9 will be eligible for additional time to complete summer reading assignments, if necessary.  Even so, we strongly suggest that you make every effort to complete your assignments on time, even if you are a late-enrollee.  It may feel like a lot of work in August, but it will be much more difficult to catch up once new assignments begin in September.  Remember, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with each teacher as to late completion of summer assignments.

WHEN should I start working on my summer assignments?

Most teachers ask that you not start doing your summer work until August, so that it will be fresh in your mind when you return to school on August 23.  The books you are asked to read and the writing assignments you are asked to do will be used during the first few weeks of school, and you need to be familiar with them.  It is NOT a good idea to do your summer assignments in June!   Please note:  some teachers (especially in advanced science and math classes) ask that work be done throughout the summer.  Please follow the teacher’s directions and guidelines.

What if I have questions?

Many teachers provide direct email links in their assignment listings so that you can contact them with problems or questions.  If there is no link, or you have been unable to reach the teacher, please email me at kacunnin@queenanne.org.  I will make sure your questions get answered.

Summer is a time for freedom and fun.  We hope it is also a time for planning and preparation.  QAS Summer Reading Program assignments are an important part of each student’s education as they plan and prepare for another successful year.  We wish everyone a wonderful and inspiring summer.
