The Alfred Street Baptist Church Foundation is offering $5000 scholarships renewable for four years for a total of $20,000.   Applicants should be high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college or university this fall.  Applicants need not qualify for a Pell grant, but they must demonstrate financial need. Please act quickly.  The application deadline is April 20, 2007. See Ms. Krahling for details and an application.

ABSALOM JONES SCHOLARSHIPS    St. Philip's, Laurel, is offering two $1,000 scholarships honoring the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first African American priest in the Episcopal Church. Scholarships will be awarded in June for the 2008/2009 academic year to individuals who have demonstrated qualities exemplified by Jones such as compassion, leadership, service and interest in education. One of the scholarships will be awarded in honor and memory of Ellen D.Washington, the driving force behind the Scholarship Fund. The other will be awarded in honor and memory of James Whitney, long-time St. Philip's leader and community volunteer. Individuals who will be attending an institution of higher education and are in need of financial assistance are invited to apply by March 31. Applicants must reside, work, attend school or be a member of a parish in the Diocese of Washington. GWU SCHOLARSHIPS

St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom and George Washington University are offering a scholarship of up to $20,000 to a degree candidate or candidates on the undergraduate level entering GWU for the fall 2008 semester.

***In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Rachel Carson’s birth, the Newton Marasco Foundation (NMF) created the Rachel Carson Scholar Program to raise awareness of and honor Rachel Carson’s work. The goal of the Rachel Carson Scholar Program is to recognize and honor Maryland high school juniors and seniors with a strong academic background who are taking active roles in environmental stewardship in their community. Applications are due by April 2, 2007 and will be evaluated on applicant involvement in environmental community-based activities, quality of a written essay, academic standing, and letters of recommendation. All Rachel Carson Scholars will be honored at an awards ceremony on May 24, 2007 at the Patuxent Research Refuge’s National Wildlife Visitor Center.  Monetary awards will be presented to the three Rachel Carson Scholars of highest standing. First place recipient will receive a $1,000 award. Second place recipient will receive a $750 award and third place recipient will receive a $500 award.
